Setting Up a Cosy Reading Nook for Rainy Afternoons

Setting Up a Cosy Reading Nook for Rainy Afternoons

Rainy afternoons in the UK are practically a national institution. Rather than seeing them as a washout, you can turn them into an invitation to slow down, curl up, and lose yourself in a good book. A dedicated reading nook – whether it’s a corner of the living room, a spare bedroom, or a wide windowsill – gives everyone in the family a reason to look forward to grey skies. Here’s how to create a space that’s comfortable, calming, and perfectly suited to long, lazy afternoons with a story.

Finding the Right Spot in Your Home

The best reading nooks are tucked away from the busiest parts of the house. Look for a corner that gets natural light but not direct glare – a window seat is ideal, as you can watch the rain while staying warm and dry. Avoid spots opposite the television or next to a games console, as these will pull attention away from your book. In smaller UK homes, consider an alcove, the space under the stairs, or a quiet landing. If floor space is tight, choose a lightweight beanbag or folding chair that can be moved aside when needed. The key is that the spot feels like a destination, not a thoroughfare.

Seating That Makes You Want to Stay

Comfort is non-negotiable. A supportive armchair with a high back, such as a wingback or a compact tub chair, works well for adults. Children often prefer a beanbag, a floor cushion, or a child-sized armchair. Whatever you choose, add a lumbar cushion for lower-back support and a footstool so you can put your feet up. Layer the nook with soft textures:

  • A wool or fleece throw for chilly afternoons
  • Two or three plump cushions in different sizes
  • A small basket of spare blankets for family members
  • A hot water bottle or microwavable wheat bag for extra warmth

Keep a small side table within reach for a mug of tea, a glass of water, or a plate of biscuits. If you have the space, a chaise longue or a rocking chair adds a touch of old-fashioned comfort.

Lighting for Cosy Reading

Harsh overhead lights will ruin the atmosphere and strain your eyes. Instead, use a floor lamp with an adjustable arm, a wall-mounted reading light, or a clip-on book light. Choose warm white bulbs – around 2700K – and fit a dimmer switch if you can. On rainy days, natural light is soft but often dim, so you’ll need a supplement. Position the light over your shoulder or behind you so it falls onto the page without creating glare. For children, a small nightlight-style lamp or a string of fairy lights can make the nook feel magical without being too bright. A candle inside a lantern (never leave it unattended) adds a lovely glow, but battery-operated candles are a safer option for families.

Stocking Your Nook with Books and Comforts

A reading nook needs books within easy reach. A small bookshelf, a wicker basket, a magazine rack, or a slim book trolley will do the job. Rotate your collection every few weeks so there’s always something new to discover. Include old favourites, recent finds, magazines, and – for younger readers – comics and picture books. Low shelves or front-facing displays encourage children to choose their own stories. Keep a small tray or shelf for a mug, a coaster, and a notebook and pen for jotting down thoughts or recommendations. A tiny vase with a single flower or a sprig of greenery adds life without clutter.

Creating a Calm Atmosphere

Rainy afternoons already provide the perfect soundtrack – the gentle drumming of rain on the window. If you want to soften other household noises, add a thick rug or a heavy curtain, both of which absorb sound. Some people enjoy soft instrumental music or an audiobook playing quietly in the background; others prefer silence. A diffuser with a few drops of lavender, cedarwood, or orange essential oil can make the air feel calm and inviting. Scented candles are lovely but keep them out of reach of children and pets. Temperature matters too: a small hot water bottle or an electric blanket on a low setting will keep you snug. Finally, keep the space tidy. A clutter-free nook feels more restful, so use a basket to tidy away blankets and cushions at the end of the day.

Little Touches for the Whole Family

Involve everyone in making the nook their own. Let each family member choose a cushion or a blanket that reflects their personality. Create a rotating book basket so everyone has something to look forward to. You might even set a regular “rainy afternoon reading time” when the whole household gathers with their books – a lovely alternative to screen time. Add a small sign that says “Reading in progress” for older children who want undisturbed quiet. Keep a torch in a drawer for power cuts, and a few wrapped snacks for emergencies. With a comfortable seat, good light, a stack of stories, and a calm atmosphere, your reading nook will become the best-loved spot in the house whenever the heavens open.
