Rainy Day Crafts Using Everyday Household Items

Rainy Day Crafts Using Everyday Household Items

Turn a Washout into a Workshop

There is a particular kind of disappointment that comes with a grey Saturday when the picnic blanket is already by the door and the children are bouncing off the walls. Before you reach for the tablet, take a quick look through your kitchen drawers and recycling bin. Most homes already hold everything needed for an afternoon of proper making, and the best rainy day crafts share three qualities: they use items you would otherwise throw away, they need almost no adult supervision once set up, and they end with something a child is genuinely proud of.

Set aside a table, cover it with an old shower curtain or a bin bag cut open, and let the mess happen. The goal is not a perfect finished object. It is a stretched attention span, a bit of problem-solving and a quiet hour or two that does not involve a screen.

Cardboard Castles and Box Buildings

Cardboard is the most versatile craft material in the house, and cereal boxes, delivery boxes and loo roll tubes are perfect raw material. Flatten the boxes first so children can draw their design in pencil before anything is cut.

  • Cereal box castle: cut the top flaps into battlements, then tape two or three boxes together for towers. Loo roll tubes make turrets and drawbridges.
  • Kitchen roll tube creatures: paint or wrap in coloured paper, add googly eyes or drawn-on faces, and glue on paper wings, fins or legs.
  • Shoe box theatre: cut a window in one long side, hang a fabric scrap as a curtain, and use wooden spoons or pencils with paper figures taped on as puppets.
  • Egg box gardens: cut individual cups from a cardboard egg box, fill with cotton wool or tissue, and paint tiny flowers and vegetables to plant inside.

Plain masking tape is the secret weapon here. It holds cardboard firmly, can be painted over, and is far easier for small hands than glue. Keep a roll within reach and let them build upwards rather than outwards.

Painting Without a Paint Set

You do not need a shop-bought paint palette. A few pantry staples make washable paints that behave surprisingly well on paper, cardboard and fabric.

  • Flour paint: mix two tablespoons of plain flour with a little cold water to a smooth paste, then add hot water and stir until thick. Split into jars and tint with food colouring. It dries matte and slightly raised.
  • Cornflour paint: combine equal parts cornflour and water, add colouring, and use while wet for a glossy finish that cracks beautifully as it dries.
  • Washable brushes: cotton buds, sponge offcuts, old toothbrushes, forks and the ends of loo roll tubes all make interesting marks.

Old shirts worn back to front make excellent aprons, and a splash of white vinegar in the water jar helps lift paint from brushes. If you are worried about stains, stick to cardboard and scrap paper rather than anything precious.

Kitchen Science That Doubles as Craft

Some of the most absorbing indoor activities sit halfway between craft and experiment, and they tend to hold children's attention far longer than a straightforward sticking project.

  • Salt dough decorations: mix one cup of plain flour, half a cup of salt and roughly half a cup of warm water until it forms a soft dough. Roll out, cut shapes with a glass or biscuit cutter, poke a hole for ribbon if hanging, then air dry for two days or bake on a low heat for three hours. Paint once cool.
  • Cloud dough: eight parts flour to one part baby oil or vegetable oil gives a soft, mouldable mixture that sweeps up easily and smells pleasant.
  • Cornflour slime: two parts cornflour to one part water creates a substance that pours like liquid and snaps like solid. Add a drop of food colouring and let them explore in a washing-up bowl.
  • Bubble snakes: cut the bottom from a plastic bottle, stretch an old sock over the open end, secure with an elastic band and blow through the neck into a shallow dish of washing-up liquid and water.

These are best done on a hard floor with a towel underneath. The clean-up is part of the fun if you hand over a dustpan and brush and let them help.

Junk Modelling and Collage Treasure

Keep a "making box" by the kitchen door and add to it through the week: clean yoghurt pots, bottle tops, cereal inner bags, wrapping paper scraps, wool ends, buttons, ribbon and cardboard tubes. When a rainy day arrives, the box becomes a free craft shop.

  • Collage self-portraits: draw a simple head and shoulders, then fill hair with wool, eyes with buttons and clothes with fabric offcuts.
  • Bottle top stamps: dip the ridged edge in paint and press onto paper to print circles and patterns.
  • Newspaper weaving: cut newspaper into strips and weave them through a card loom made from a cereal box, then trim and display.
  • Story jars: decorate a clean jar with tissue paper and glue, then fill with folded paper slips of story starters for evenings when someone claims to be bored.

Keeping It Manageable for Grown-Ups

A few small habits keep rainy day crafting joyful rather than stressful. Set out only the materials for one activity at a time and put them away before starting the next. Give each child their own tray or baking sheet to contain the work. Keep a damp cloth and a bin bag at the table from the start, and involve everyone in a two-minute tidy-up before the reward of a snack.

It also helps to let the project be whatever your child wants it to be. A castle that becomes a spaceship, a painting that turns into a map, a salt dough blob that is proudly declared a dinosaur: all of it counts. The point is the making, the mess and the time spent together, not the finished article on the mantelpiece. Come the next downpour, you will have a cupboard full of possibility and a child who reaches for the cardboard before the remote.
